How to convert xps to docx file

XPS (XML Paper Specification) is a file format developed by Microsoft as a PDF alternative, primarily used to display document page layouts. DOCX is the modern file format for Microsoft Word documents and is widely used for text processing.

An updated version of the XPS file format is OXPS, which was introduced in Windows 10. There is a similar use for this file format as for the PDF format, which is widely used and supported by many programs. In any software that does not support the XPS file format, it is better to convert the XPS file to a PDF document first. Then, convert the PDF document or import it into your software.

XPS to Word document conversion

Windows PC

Open the XPS file using the XPS Viewer (previously included in Windows; in newer versions, it may need to be installed from the Microsoft Store). Open Microsoft Word, copy and paste the content into a new Word document, and save it as DOCX.

Another way is to print the XPS file from XPS Viewer to PDF using a virtual PDF printer. Then, try to import the newly created PDF file into Word.

macOS

Mac users don’t have native tools that directly convert XPS to DOCX. However, some apps in the App Store, such as XPSView, can view XPS files. With these apps, you can print XPS documents to PDF and then import them into Word.

Linux

Although XPS files are not directly supported, you can first convert XPS to PDF using command-line tools like xpstopdf and then import the PDF into LibreOffice Writer to save it as DOCX.

Convert XPS to DOCX online

You can also use online tools to convert XPS files to DOCX. However, these tools are not always reliable, and you may send private data elsewhere. Online tools for converting XPS files to DOCX may not always provide accurate results. The conversion process heavily relies on the tool's quality and the document's complexity. Complex layouts, embedded images, and special formatting may not be preserved or may be altered during conversion.

Convert XPS to DOCX on iOS and Android mobile devices

File converter apps are available in the App Store and Google Play Store for free or paid. These apps promise to convert XPS files to DOCX but mostly do not support the XPS file format as an input file format, or final results may vary. So, the direct conversion of XPS to Word is quite limited on these platforms.

A universal guide to converting XPS files

Instead of searching for XPS to Word conversion, converting XPS to PDF and then PDF to Word is better. PDF files are universal, and most modern apps support at least the PDF format. Additionally, PDF files are more compact and easier to share than XPS files.

Here is a universal step-by-step guide to converting XPS to PDF and then to Word:

  1. Open the XPS file using the XPS Viewer on your Windows PC or an XPS viewing app on macOS.
  2. Print the XPS file to PDF using a virtual PDF printer or an XPS to PDF conversion tool.
  3. Save the newly created PDF file on your computer.
  4. Open Microsoft Word and create a new document.
  5. Go to the File menu and select Open to choose the PDF file you saved earlier.
  6. Word will automatically convert the PDF file into an editable Word document.
  7. Review and make any necessary edits to the converted document.
  8. Save the document as a default DOCX file for future use or sharing.
