Converting SKB files to STL files can be straightforward if you know the right tools and methods. SKB files are backup files created by SketchUp, a popular 3D modeling software, while STL (stereolithography) files are commonly used for 3D printing. Converting SKB files to STL ensures compatibility with 3D printing workflows. If you want to transform your SKB files into STL format for 3D printing or sharing, here’s how to do it.
Step 1: Understand the SKB and STL file formats
- SKB: SketchUp automatically creates backup files to preserve your work. They are not directly editable but can be restored to the original SketchUp format (SKP).
- STL is the standard file format for 3D printing, describing the surface geometry of a 3D object.
To convert an SKB file to an STL, you must recover and export the SKP file as an STL.
Step 2: Restore the SKB to SKP
-
Rename the SKB file:
- Locate the SKB file on your computer using Windows File Explorer or a similar file manager.
- Change its extension from
.skb
to.skp
. For example, renamemodel-file-name.skb
tomodel-file-name.skp
. - Confirm the file extension change if your operating system prompts it.
-
Open in SketchUp:
- Open the renamed SKP file in SketchUp to verify the model's integrity and make any necessary edits.
Step 3: Export as STL file for printing
To convert your model into STL format:
-
Install the STL extension:
- SketchUp’s base version doesn’t include STL export functionality. You must install the SketchUp STL Extension from the Extension Warehouse.
- To install, go to SketchUp’s menu bar: Window → Extension Warehouse, search for "SketchUp STL," and click “Install.”
-
Export to the STL file format:
- With the extension installed, go to File → Export → 3D Model.
- Choose STL as the file format.
- Specify export options like units (millimeters or inches) and resolution (low, medium, or high), then save the file.
Alternative method: Use third-party tools
If you don’t have SketchUp, you can use third-party software like MeshLab or FreeCAD to open SKP files (after conversion from SKB) and export them as STL. These tools are free and support STL conversion with additional optimization options.
