What are FTW and FBK files?

FTW files are commonly associated with earlier versions of Family Tree Maker, a popular genealogy software for documenting and organizing family histories.

An FTW file contains a family tree database, including names, dates, relationships, and notes. FBK files, on the other hand, are backup files also created by Family Tree Maker, allowing users to save their family tree data. Converting an FTW file to an FBK file involves using Family Tree Maker's built-in tools to back up the data, ensuring no loss of valuable information. Newer versions of Family Tree Maker use FTMB file format, and FTMB is not compatible with previous software versions.

FTW to FBK conversion

To convert an FTW file to an FBK file, you need access to the Family Tree Maker software where the FTW file was created or a compatible program version. Open the FTW file in Family Tree Maker by navigating to File → Open and select your FTW file. Once the family tree is loaded, you can create a backup by choosing File → Backup from the menu. This action prompts you to save the file in FBK format, securing all the information within a compressed backup file that can be restored later.
