We are aware of only two currently available programs capable of converting Microsoft Word Documents directly to AbiWord Documents (.doc to .abw conversion), which should be fairly easy.
It seems your best bet is using AbiWord itself, or alternatively you can try KWord, both utilities allowing users converting standard DOC documents to ABW format.
