As far as we know, auto-backups of Word documents (.asd files) might probably be only recovered using some older versions of Word, thus up to version 2007. Once recovered, the documents may be printed as PDFs using a virtual PDF printer or default PDF export function when an official plugin was installed in Office 2007. Or you can simply save them again as .doc files and open in latest version of Word that offers PDF export function as a default function.
